Information about Malmköping
Malmköping is a small town situated in the rural district of Flen in the landscape of Sörmland.
Malmköping lies about 15 kilometres north of Flen and is the major part of tourism in the rural district. In Malmköping you can find the Tramway museum, the Folk Museum, the museum Malmahed and the “Naturum”.
The history of Malmköping goes back to the Stone Age. Malmköping itself was built around a moor in 1774 when the moor became a military exercise field and garrison location for the Södermanlands regiment. The military activity ended in 1921 when the garrison move to Strängnäs.
After the military activity has moved the gymnastic federation of Södermanland take over and organized youth camp every year from 1927-1966.
Malmköping get its market town rights in 1785. The Swedish word for market town is “köping”.
Malmköping today
Today Malmköping is well-known for its big summer event “Malma Marken”. To this event there will come up to 100 000 visitors to Malmköping. Other popular event in Malmköping is the Old Market (Gammaldags Marknad).
With this two big events and lot of other events the town has get its name right. In Malmköping you even will find many nice shops where you can find everything from everyday items to a curiosity shop. In the summertime Malmköping gets lots of visitors not only for one day. Many of them have its own summer cottage in the neighbourhood of Malmköping.
